5 Tips for Teens Starting Orthodontic Treatment

Starting braces or clear liners can feel like a big change… but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Whether you're excited or a little nervous, here are five tips to help make the transition smooth and stress-free.

1. Don’t Skip the Soreness Prep
The first few days after getting braces can come with some soreness. Stick with soft foods like pasta, yogurt, and smoothies, and keep some over-the-counter pain relief on hand if needed. Most teens feel back to normal within a week.

2. Pack a Braces Kit
Keep a small pouch in your backpack with a toothbrush, floss picks, orthodontic wax, and lip balm. Having it handy during school or activities can make all the difference.

3. Choose Braces-Friendly Snacks
Skip the popcorn, chips, and sticky candy. Go for cut-up fruit, string cheese, and soft granola bars. If it’s crunchy, chewy, or could get stuck, it’s probably best to avoid.

4. Wear Your Rubber Bands
If rubber bands are part of your treatment, consistency is key. Skipping them just slows things down. A good routine now means a better smile faster.

5. Ask Questions
Not sure how to clean around a bracket? Wondering if something feels off? Just ask. We’re here to help every step of the way and no question is too small.

You've got this! We're cheering you on.
